Grave guardians are usually found in front or within Chinese ancient gravesites. Originally, they were to accompany soul of the dead, but were later regarded as guardians who used their power against demons.
The forms of grave guardians differ with the time and location. This Tang grave guardian is in a stooping position, with a lion’s face, a deer’s horns and hooves. Wing on the shoulders are in flame shape. The body portion is covered with green and amber glaze.
