The ancient Egyptians believed that human live is composed of flesh, soul and personality. When a person dies, the vitality enters into the another worldwhile the personality stays with the flesh. When flesh, soul and personality all combine into the other world, the dead will revive eternity. Therefore, since mid-Empire, the Egyptians painted the face of the dead on the mummy's face, so the soul wouldn't miss it when it returned. This female paper Mask found with the mummy in a stone coffin is painted in soft yellow, white, red and light blue . The facial expression is gentle and serene, supposedly a popular artistic style back then.
