The ancient Egyptians believed that human live is composed of flesh, soul and personality. When a person dies, the vitality enters into the another worldwhile the personality stays with the flesh. When flesh, soul and personality all combine into the other world, the dead will revive eternity. Therefore, since mid-Empire, the Egyptians painted the face of the dead on the mummy's face, so the soul wouldn't miss it when it returned.
