workshop of jean-Antoine HOUDON (french, 1731 -
1828)
Terracotta, signed and dated 1791, H:39,4cm
Houdon's artistic achievement is founded in sculpture. This art work is modeled after Houdon own's 3-years-old daughter,Claudine Haudon. The innocent eyes, tiny nose and full lips depict a lovely child. The chubby cheeks and double chin are inviting for loving pinches. Techniquewise, Houdon's innovation is the carving of the eyes. Tradisionally, pupils are carved deep to create a natural depth of the eyes while Houdon realistically carved the eyeballs, the pupils, the eyes-lines and the eye sockets to make the eyes real as if they communicate. The focus is on the child's face, with the robe details simplified.
