Gotch of Northamptonshire studied painting at Antwerp and Paris when he wes young. A trip to Italy in 1891 became a turning piont in his career of art. The choice of Bablical subject in 'The Massage', the use of round painting, or the expressions of the mind with gentures are deeply influenced by Renaissance paintings, whereas the contemporaryfigures, poppies and background are characteristic of the artist's work.
